Now, where were we...?

Yes, I know it's been a week since the last post, but when you see all we've been up to, hopefully you'll forgive us!

On Tuesday night, we got the chance to learn some traditional Breton dances.  Local musicians and a group of folks who belong to the local "Celtic club" were on hand to teach our group several authentic dances, and everyone had a blast! Here are some photos:

Les Boules Bretonnes


On Wednesday afternoon, we were invited to a local Centre de Loisirs (a city-run youth center) where we got to know some local youth, shared a meal, took photos, and then learned to play the Breton version of boules from some members of the local Boules association. This afternoon was organized by Laëtitia, our on-site coordinator, and it could not have gone better!  We had a delicious lunch -- galettes saucisses (sausages wrapped in a savory crêpe) and gâteau au chocolat (chocolate cake) with the students from the center.  And after lunch and a group photo, it was off to the "boulodrome", a space dedicated to the game of boules, for some instruction and friendly competition.  The teams were mixed -- our students (and teachers), staff and students from the Center, and the (mostly elderly) gentlemen who are regular Boules players.  We had a great time! We all learned not only exactly how the game works but even some strategies for winning.  The exchange between our group, the youth center kids and staff, and the boules players made for a wonderful experience for everyone involved.  














We left bright and early on Thursday for Normandy.  There will be a new blog post later today or tomorrow with photos and description of our wonderful excursion!

Hope you enjoy this glimpse of the last days of IUHPFL Saint Brieuc 2023!  We spent much of the last week getting ready for the Farewell show, the Program Magazine, and our trip to Paris.   The Farewell Show This is such an incredibly talented and creative group, and the host families were absolutely wowed by the student performances!  We can't wait for them to see the original artwork, poetry, open letters, and pages of pure fun in the magazine that the students created.  As a preview, though, here is the cover for Wednesday night's show with calligraphy by Sophia and artwork by Ana -- all completed in a short 20 minutes.  😳 The show was absolutely amazing, and the host families commented on how impressed they were not only by how talented the students were, but also their willingness to share those talents in front of an audience. ...

First week of classes

After a weekend with their host families, students arrived on Monday morning ready for their first day of classes.  They attend classes in smaller groups of 7-8 students, but everyone has the same classes: Linguistics and Pronunciation, Grammar and Communication, and Culture and Literature.  After morning announcements, we head upstairs to our three classrooms and start our day.   We have two classes in the morning before heading down to the dining room. Lunch at the Igloo is cafeteria-style, and the instructors have already received compliments on how polite and well-mannered our IUHPFL students are! Although not as long as some French lunches, it is nice to have a relaxed 65 minutes to relax a bit mid-day.  :) After lunch, it's time for the last class of the day, followed by activities ranging from music and art to theater and sports. Bonjour from Saint-Brieuc!! We've only been here about 48 hours at this point, but we've done so much already!  After arriving at the airport in the early afternoon on Thursday, we boarded our bus and headed to the beautiful village of Chartres.  We enjoyed a short tour of the magnificent cathedral, followed by a picnic of sandwiches, chips, and chocolate éclairs outside the church.  Then it was back to the bus for our trip to Saint-Brieuc. Despite a late arrival on Thursday night, everyone was happy to meet up again on Friday morning for our first day at the Igloo.  Students took a test in the morning, had lunch at the Igloo cafeteria, and then headed out for a walking tour of Saint-Brieuc in the afternoon.                                                      Taking their first test of the summer!
